Tigellinus (d. AD 69)

Bust of a man of the Claudian–Neronian period (1st century AD): marble, Indianapolis Museum of Art. An image of the period; no portrait of this person survives.

Tigellinus became praetorian prefect after Burrus’s death in AD 62. Tacitus describes him as a man without shame who knew everything about the emperor’s secret tastes (Annals 14.51). According to Tacitus the fire of AD 64 broke out a second time on his estate (Annals 15.40). Under Galba Vinius saved him, and Galba even issued an edict rebuking the people for demanding his death (Suetonius, Galba 15). Under Otho, in AD 69, he received word at Sinuessa that his last hour had come, and he died (Tacitus, Histories 1.72).
